The aim for this project was to reinvent the map, and to use the folds to emphasise the idea within the piece.
The map is a brain, where the streets are the thoughts that resemble nerves. The brain shape and the thought streets symbolize the fact that the story is written from memory, it is a map that someone tries to come up in their head. The map is meant to be read clockwise, and it can be read in an infinite loop, as a spiral or circle. This idea can be a hint about how thoughts keep repeating in our heads, especially memories.
When folded, you can see the word “love“ written on the map. The map shows a story from shy beginnings to a happy time and to a sad end or a new resolution. If the map is read clockwise, the story actually rewinds, and it can be resumed. The streets mark different points from a relationship, and how a relationship can end, but it also shows the key to rewinding it back to the beginning – which is simply listening and understanding each other. The map therefore shows that love is not only about feeling good with a person, but also having the strength to pass through difficult times.
